It couldn’t have been a
nicer day for the inaugural “Go The Distance” Walk held on May 30th. The
event, sponsored by the Northern Region Center For Independent Living
(NRCIL) and the Lewis County
Community Mental Health Center, was organized to celebrate the success of
people with psychiatric disabilities. About 70 people participated in the
nearly five mile walk, which started in downtown Lowville and ended in New
Bremen at the campus of Opportunities.
Following the walk, a brief program featured local and state representatives
who spoke in support of the event. A proclamation was read by Legislator
Gerald Reed that declared May as Mental Health Month in Lewis County. Jody
Szczech and Brian Phillips, representatives from the NYS Office Of Mental
Health and NY Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services,
respectively, also gave brief presentations. A balloon release then
followed.
For its part, Opportunities’ employees helped out by participating as
walkers, preparing the reception area, and preparing a variety of entrees,
salads, and desserts for a luncheon held at the conclusion of the event. The
agency’s involvement was part of Opportunities’ “Giving Back To The
Community Day”, in which the agency closes one day each year to perform a
local community service project.
According to NRCIL officials, the walk is anticipated to be an annual event.
