Opportunities was
recently awarded $20,000 through a grant from the Mary Kay Charitable Ash
Foundation to support ongoing efforts in helping women affected by domestic
violence. The agency was one of 150 shelters or dwellings nationally which
received an award. "Our Foundation has always been dedicated to helping
women," said Ryan Rogers, Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation board member
and grandson of Mary Kay Ash. "We are hopeful that these grants will succeed
in heightening awareness of the insidious problem of domestic violence
against women, as well as providing much-needed financial aid to local
shelters on a grassroots level."
According to Kathleen Purington, Director of Opportunities’ Domestic
Violence/Rape Crisis Services, the funds will be put to very good use.
"Domestic violence is such a significant and growing problem, and one that
affects our community greatly. This grant will help us continue our work to
protect, educate and care for victims of domestic abuse," said Ms. Purington.

Opportunities’ safe dwelling provides a
temporary place to stay for individuals and families who have been
victimized by domestic violence. Located in a confidential location, the
dwelling can serve as an important stepping stone in helping families escape
the cycle of abuse from their perpetrators. While in the Safe Dwelling,
victims receive counseling, legal and personal advocacy, information and
referrals, awareness education, and transportation to court.
