Lewis County Food Pantry Network expands hours |
 |
| Giving thanks—With a
little help from the Food Pantry Network, 26 families facing tough times
were able to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for their families last year. The
turkeys were provided through a generous private donation. |
|
In an effort to
serve more families during these economically tough times, the Lewis County
Food Pantry Network is expanding its hours of operation. The network
includes food pantries in Harrisville, Croghan, Copenhagen, and Port Leyden,
which are entirely staffed with volunteers. Up until recently, these
pantries served families by appointment only. According to Vicki Meyer,
Family Services Director at Opportunities, expanded hours are being phased
in as adjustments are worked out at each local pantry. “Each pantry is
working toward offering an ‘open hours’ schedule once each month, which will
hopefully make it more convenient for families who need to access food, as
well as volunteers who staff the pantry,” said Ms. Meyer. She added that
each pantry will continue to meet with families by appointment if needed.
A fifth pantry in the network is located in New Bremen on the campus of
Opportunities, which continues to be open Monday through Friday from 8 AM—4
PM, except on major holidays. |

In 2007, 162 families
received food through the Lewis County Food Pantry network. |
| About the Lowville Food Pantry:
The Lowville Food Pantry operates independently from the Lewis County Food
Pantry. Referrals are
not required to receive food. The Pantry is open weekdays from 9 AM -
